If children (generally) take after the darker parent, why are certain kids still white?

I've seen this happened a couple times. My brother's wife is African American. They only have a daughter and she still came out looking like a female version of my brother, like his twin sister. She's now 8 years old and remains white with wavy light brown hair. With the exception of the body frame and maybe smile, she looks nothing like the mother. She hardly looks mixed, as if the mother had no influence on the genes at all.

Supposedly she would've come out tanned and taking after the mother. Why are certain kids still white even when the other parent had darker complexions?

The girl literally came out of her belly and from what I was told it was a natural birth without epidural. And looks nothing like mom.
