Does the origin of the names you choose for your children matter?

If I had a daughter, I would give her a name of Persian origin.

I have often wondered this and asked my parents who somehow always seem to distract me by changing the subject. I am the youngest of 5. My older sisters all have more traditional, older, meaningful names.

When my parents got to naming me I believe they just didn't care all that much anymore and decided my fate over drinks one Saturday nite. "Hey, what are we gonna' name her?" , "I don't care. Pass me the brandy."

And hence , I was named after an alcoholic beverage. Some people say that explains a lot about me. (Spelled Brandi , I believe in an attempt to hide their drunken blunder)

Not the origin itself but I think it's important to chose a local version of the name to avoid confusion.

I have a twin brother. I was named after my Mother's father and my brother was named after my fathers father. I did not name any of my sons after me. We just gave them common names that we thought sounded nice. Some guys are hung up on naming their sons after them. Some people name their kids after a rich relative.

Apparently, black people name their kids after random syllables. Even another black guy said so (his name was Jeff,) but he was complaining about the fact black women's names all start with a "k" followed by random nonsense.

I was named after my dad’s best friend. Then mom added more to it and I don’t like it. Sounds too childish

My wife said I could name our son anything I wanted but it had to be easy to say. I asked the nurse if she had a piece of paper and pen and something for me to write on. I narrowed it down to three names. Crossed out two and the one I was left, I picked up the paper and noticed the object the nurse brought me was a book on baby names? I opened it up to the one I chose only to find out that it meant - The greatest. 😀👍. And he really is.

Yes, it does. My Partner is a Muslim Nigerian and our kids will have either nigerian or muslim names.

I'm more about what the name means. My son's name means "Bold and impetuous light bringer" and it fits him perfectly
