I did something stupid. I live with my mom. We are having a Christmas dinner tomorrow. My sister and brother in law are coming. I was having a conversation with my friend the other day. We both are awkward people. I was running out of things to say. He said he wasn't doing anything for Christmas, so without asking, I invited him to our Christmas dinner without even asking my mom. I told my mom. She said that he can come, but he'll have to bring food because we dont have enough. She told me to ask him to bring a steak or something. Id kind of rather just tell him the truth and say that I invited you without asking my mom, and there isn't enough food.

Not rude, you can frame it as a potluck of sorts and it makes things more fun.
if it was a potluck, it should have been said so in the first invite. it’s very rude now
the mom can accommodate one more person
@DreamCrescent my mom talked me into asking him to buy some steak. He hasn't responded. Should I apologize?
you already asked him to?
yeah it’s really weird of your mom to ask that. he probably won’t show up
i don’t think it was right of your mom to see your friend as an inconvenience. like what’s she go to ask next? he pay for his meal?
it’s rude. that’s not how you treat friends. especially for holiday dinners
you don’t have to apologize now
when you see him next, acknowledge that you could have done better.
just let this one go and your mom will have her select few at her dinner
I’m sorry but saying that it’s rude to ask a guest to bring something sounds crazy lol there’s nothing wrong with that. If someone invites me someplace please allow me to bring a dish, some wine, something! That would feel polite to me.
Same here! It’s an honor if someone invited me to their house or business or farm, etc. and asked me to bring a dish or wine.
Yep! I feel bad going empty handed and never do, even if it’s just some wine. Host is already doing so much, food and planning wise, I have no problem contributing even last minute. If I can do it of course.
Totally agree and it’s common courtesy. Host spent so much time to put things together and clean their home. If I am told not to bring anything, the least I offer is to do dishes or clean up after the event is over.
