Is it rude to order something expensive if someone offers to buy you dinner/lunch?

Lets say someone offers to take you out to lunch or dinner and they offer to pay, whether it's a friend, a date, family member, whoever. Is it rude to order something expensive if you know they're the one whos paying?

No, it's not rude as long you didn't do it intentionally and you just wanted a certain dish. When people offers you without saying a price, then they can't expect you to not pick what you wants. If money is a problem for them, they shouldn't offer themselves in the first place. When I'm hanging out with people, I don't expect them to pay for me and I'm not into paying for them either.

In Scandinavia you should pay for yourself regardless if it's with friends or a date, because people should earn enough to be able to take care of themselves. If they don't, then their boss is the problem. It's not polite to give people tips either, because it's basically saying their boss is mean and doesn't pay them enough in my opinion. If I wants to tips anyone, I'd rather do it with a compliment than with my money.

I would ask them what they're ordering and order something that costs cheaper than that. I'm also willing to order the cheapest thing on the menu if I feel that the person is less financially well-off than I am.

No, they offered to pay. But its best to ask them what they can afford instead of assuming and not order something even YOU cannot pay. Think like that and always communicate. I don't know what's wrong with people anymore. Use your head. Would you order something even YOU cannot afford to pay even if you have the money? Think about that. So unless they say order whatever you like, it's best you don't do it.

I wouldn't get anything any more than 10% more expensive than the person who's paying.

If my boyfriend (who happens to pay for most meals) gets something that costs $13, I won't typically get anything over $14-15. I generally match or go below though.

Maybe a little. I do that so that the one who’s buying will get annoyed and just let me pay for myself 😂

But anyways I feel like if you’re going to offer to pay then make sure to draw your price line because it’s completely fair if th other person blows your pockets.

On the flip side I hate when I'm hunger and a person says dinner will be on them. That means I can't order what I want as if i was paying. I have to order something in the price range that they ordered. I'd rather just pay and get what I want

Depends of their financial status and just how expensive is the more expensive one. I for one would appreciate if someone chose something cheaper when i am paying so naturally this is how i behave when others offer to pay my share
