But do welcome signs make you feel welcome? Or are they so ubiquitous as to have lost meaning. Do places that don't have welcome signs not want you there?

when I moved into my new house I want to the liquor store to buy beer. They had a big banner across the back of the store. It said "Welcome to "Anytown" I was really touched that the store would recognize the fact that I was a new resident to Anytown. Then I found out that there was a famous pro athlete who also just moved into the town and the sign was really for him.
A few years later I quit drinking and within months that liquor store went out of business. Coincidence?
It often just feels like a compulsory exercise not unlike the „Smile, you’re at Mr. Smiley‘s“ scenes in American Beauty. 🤷♂️
Our little town doesn't have a "Welcome" sign 'cuz we're not even technically big enough to be a town. And if we were a town we prolly still wouldn't have one 'cuz we don't really want any "outsiders" here.
As for "Welcome" mats, I so need to get me one of these. 🤣
Feels like a polite signpost of location nothing more.

Yeah, welcome signs are sorta ubiquitous and the meaning may be diluted because of that. But hey, someone at least thought to observe the social formality of a welcome greeting. Why not approach it that way and enter a new place with the attitude that they are welcoming you?
Seeing Welcome is 15th on the list - LAST - in the first sign, I am going to feel unwelcome and ANGRY.
The Welsh Dragon on one, made me realize these are Welsh welcome signs but now I'm pissed I am pissed.
We all know these signs are tokenism and the only value they have is to tell you that you have hit the outskirts of another dreary place you will not stop at.
I view them as more of an introduction than a welcome. It answers the question, “Where are we?” more than “Can we be here?”. “No trespassing” and “private property” answer the latter more effectively. They’re kind of anti-welcome signs.
Yes, they make me feel welcome but welcome mats at somebody’s door. I think nothing of it it’s just a random mat. What else are they supposed to say?
"Please wipe your feet"
If it was a sign saying "Welcome To Purple Poppy's" I'd be feeling welcome AND especially excited !
No, I just take them as information there I'm entering a certain area.
Love them. I always try to take pics of them
It is better than City Limit signs. I like it at times and sometimes think, I’m going to test that :D
Some people are nice and mean it so I take it in that spirit.
Hmm... One of these things is not like the other.
Depends on where I am at the time. I like those Celtic welcome signs.
IN my village there is a huge welcome sign its nice.
Most time those signs don't mean diddly squat.
only if they say "bienvenido"
A wee bit but not much
Nope. Just a sign.
