What are some moments in your life that have made you confront your own mortality?

Was a girl I was sexually compatible with who wanted to, but she had a boyfriend/husband she had a kid with. She made it seem like he consented, but that wasn't the case. So when I pressed her on that she revealed it was behind his back, but only for the sake of their relationship. Things weren't good with them but they stayed together purely for the sake of the kid, if it wasn't for that she'd leave and I'd actually be helping their relationship instead of hurting it.

The odd part was I felt this immense unnatural desire to go trough with it, like a true devil vs angel on my shoulder moment. It made so much sense to go trough with it in that moment even though it makes no sense to me right now.

And the angel that was pulling me in the other direction? That part only asked questions. It didn't tell me what to do. It just asked questions. Questions like how i'd feel if this was reversed, what would happen with this friend if the relationship inevitably ends and your partially at fault, etc.

The questions were directly aimed at my sense of morality as a counter to the desire to do it. And I couldn't help but agree it with be immoral to go trough with this as tempting as it was in that moment. I just couldn't look past the fact that while I may be helping her i'd be harming the boyfriend and that i'd hate myself if I was in his place. So I declined and the friendship faded after that.

The interesting part is that a few months later something I learned from her was the key to unlocking the best relationship of my life. It was like she was the test if I deserved that reward. Very unusual situation, but I am very thankful for the choices I made and now that I am no longer in the situation I can't imagine how I could possibly have said yes. It truly was the temptation talking so strong in the moment clouding my judgement, but thankfully not preventing me from still making a good judgement.

The deaths of my parents and of several friends throughout my life. One friend in high school got killed on a motor cycle. A guy with whom I was very good friends in high school ODd on heroin in his late 20s. A good friends from high school died from Parkinson's a couple years ago. A very good friend who was a few years older than I died of a heart attack a couple years ago. I miss him a lot.
A cousin died from cancer recently. She was the same age of my sister who is three years my junior. Our family was very close to ours when we were growing up.

I've had lots of close calls in my life, but those never really made me question my mortality. It was the deaths of others that made me realize that none of us live forever and the end can come at any time.

Seeing someone I care about get seriously sick.

Moments like that remind you life isn’t as guaranteed as it feels day to day. Your priorities shift fast , small drama matters less, time and people matter more.

It makes you think about how you’re living, not just how long.
