When did you first start reflecting on your mortality?

When did you first start reflecting on your mortality? When did you really start to realize "wow, I'm actually going to die someday"? Have you even come to that realization yet?

For me, it was in the 2015-2016 time frame. I'd always had an awareness of death, but it didn't settle in until then. I was starting to take a closer look at myself and ponder key life decisions. I'd also been undergoing some significant changes in my faith life. And around that time, a family friend told me over some drinks one night that "your life is an invitation to your funeral."

When did you come to this realization?

The day I had a death of sorts, I didn't physically die but lost my health and in that moment I became depressed as well when the people responsible were heartless.

Then, a little later that day I hit up an online friend for help. She reminded me of who I was, and in that conversation I could feel it. My soul. The person I truly am deep within wasn't broken at all, he was strong, loving and full of energy despite my body having none.

That feeling got stronger and stronger and has never left me, it keeps me warm like a flame. And in that moment I knew I was immortal. Not the physical body of course, I will die some day. But I have complete peace with death, because either my soul will life on peacefully, or it will not matter.

When I was fairly young. My dad passed away September 16, 1999, just a couple of months after my 4th birthday. My mom had passed when I was ten months old so I do not have a memory of her, save for old photos and a few videos. But my dad's death hit me hard. I did not understand what it meant that he had died. I thought about it a lot and it dawned on me a few years later that I was also going to die eventually. So I cannot say a specific date, but it was definitely before I turned ten.

My late teens, as I approached adulthood. It was good timing, because it helped me maintain focus on life goals (not at every moment). This helped me through challenging social times later in post grad work.

I was 6 years old and very happy and I wondered if God was real because I loved my life and wanted to live forever.
