When I was child we did meet up regularly with our relatives, but now I rarely see them except at funerals.

So I do feel a bit awkward, and I thought I would get to know my relatives better.

Recently I invited and met up with them, and I arranged a meeting in small groups, on different days, because I don't know them very well, and with large groups people tend to go with people they know the best, and then it's difficult to separate them, and start a conversation.

Everything went very well, and we are arranging another meeting soon.

As I've aged and my extended family members have amassed families of their own, it's rare that I'm ever around my family anymore.

That being said, on occasion there've been some uncomfortable family gatherings over the years.

I usually have a good time at family gatherings as long as there's booze. But a lot of the time I try to chime into conversations, especially with my immediate family, I get talked over and my opinions aren't valued as much, and I know that it's due to where I am in life.

If there are no common goals or shared interests, of course you'll feel out of place; it's happened to me, but for laughter or jokes, that's universal.

Sometimes, because most of my natural family has passed away. So I always go to the in-laws

I always have that feeling because my dad's side of the family thinks so differently than me. I have interests off the beaten path.
