I get what you're saying about the branding and celebrities though, but people swallow this Celebrity Brand Name shit up, they totally buy into the idea of trying to emulate that particular "celebrity" and will consequently buy any old bit of shit they slap their name on.

@redeyemindtricks I'm guessing, but the last time I bought Clinique it was about £20 for a lipstick and that must have been over ten years ago. It was £8 for a tiny bottle of conditioner... but man... that's stuff was amazing!

Those are usually $17-18 at full price here. At the exchange rate, your price is higher, obviously, but that makes sense because it's an import.

Well... If you ever come to the US, they have Clinique in the duty-free section of basically every major airport, so you could stock up on the stuff at US prices without paying tax. LOL...

Do you have Sephora over there yet? I was surprised to learn it wasn't there a couple years ago, considering Sephora/MUFE is based right across the chunnel in France.

@redeyemindtricks never heard of it, and to be honest I don't even wear make up anymore. I think the last bit of cosmetics I bought was a glittery eye liner for a pound from the thrift store, ha! I find it all just makes me look old and I've rubbed it off after ten minutes. I'm au naturel now... complete with blemishes :) :)

hmm... Apart from the looking-better thing, I genuinely *enjoy* doing makeup in different ways and different looks. Couldn't imagine stopping, tbh -- and I'm looking forward to when my daughter's going to be a teenager in a few years, too. (I grew up with a single father and all brothers, so... apart from that, she's being raised exactly like her brothers lol)

@redeyemindtricks I know what you mean but I'm not interested in it anymore. I enjoy face painting and getting all pretty for a festival or parade with glitter butterflys and pretty colours, but I can't be arsed to paint my face for normal life.

My skin is incredibly sensitive too, I've had to start making my own body and face washes because the normal stuff is so harsh on my skin, make up always leaves me with terrible itchy, red skin... I'm a sensitive little flower!

ahah I can totally do full face in about 3-4 minutes. if I do something funky and design-y with mah lips, then that's some additional time, but it's still well under 10 minutes total. It's really not even a noticeable amount of time or effort.

Then again, I'm 41 and I've been doing this stuff since my mid teenage years. (Funny story, my father had a... well, girlfriend? friend with benefits? I dunno what she was exactly, but... a girl... over once. She did some kind of burlesque dancing thing as a part-time gig, and so I captured her makeup bag and held it hostage until she taught me the basics. XDDD) So, that means I've probably done it 10,000 times by now. TEN THOUSAND TIMES.

... but nah, it's like how athletes have those elaborate pre-game rituals that they go through. It's kinda like that. It even gets me focused and pumped for whatever I'm doing that day. Totes srs

Good Take. Not only true of the makeup industry, this is and has been a common marketing technique. Think of all of the money Kylie gets for licensing her name and image. That is added to the price of your makeup. Same goes for a lot of other shit with a celebrity name or image.
