A Maxi dress or skirt is a floor or ankle length informal dress or skirt. Maxi dresses and skirts are formfitting at the top and loose flowing at the bottom, and cut to flow over the body. Maxi's should be one of your classic wardrobe staples because they are figure flattering to every body type from rail thin, to average, to plus, to even maternity. These dresses and skirts allow you to look really put together no matter the season, without much effort. They tend to be super comfortable, can easily be worn by those who prefer modest dress, and if you forget to shave, you can easily get away with it. What's not to love?!?

How to Style It

The fantastic thing about these skirts and dresses, is the nice long lines they create which are very figure flattering. If you are wearing the skirt version, you want to make sure you don't dump a lot of bulk on your upper half. You don't want a big billowy blousy t-shirt or a top that drags well below your natural waistline. Instead you want to pull everything in at the waist with a belt, a naturally fitted at the waist top, or wear a top that tucks in to the skirt.

To capitalize on the long lines created by the skirt or dress, wear some nice chunky jewelry like a necklace or big hoop earrings, or even a nice thick scarf in colder weather. This will draw the eye nicely from head down to toe visually giving off that nice long line you want to maintain with this look. If you have a bigger chest than your bottom, you can call less attention to your top by wearing darker colors on top, and lighter and brighter on bottom, and the reverse if the reverse is true for you.

As far as adding a sweater/jacket to the look, look for ones that hit right at the waist or can be belted in. You certainly don't want a long draggy or heavy puffer jacket style coat, because it will only add unflattering bulk to your frame.

For shoes, if you are a lover of flats, this is your time to shine. Because the dress/skirt hits right at the ankle, it gives you just enough space to show off your lovely flats. You can also rock the look with a low kitten heel or ankle boots. Unless the maxi dress/skirt has slits in it, calf high or higher boots aren't going to do much for the look because you simply can't see them.
