Congratulations! You just landed a position at a big company. And the best part? No uniforms. You don’t need to wear those hideous work clothes that you are supposed to wear every single day of the work week. Ugh! Now time to check your closet and see what you have before splurging at the mall. You just got the job so seize this moment to impress your boss and colleagues and look confident in your new career. Invest on key pieces that will complete your work look daily without breaking the bank yet still look the part. Now let’s get started:
1. Good quality shoes
You will be mostly on your feet all day at work running for meetings, making coffee for the boss, doing errands for the department head and so on. A woman needs a good quality pair of pumps/heels/boots to last her all day. Practice walking on them as you will have to wear them all day and not look like a fool when you walking in the hallway. Go neutral on the color or go wild with a nice animal print design to add pop to the whole outfit. Stay away from stripper shoes/elevator heels. Keep a pair of comfortable flats as well by your desk when you feel like dressing down. Always have in soles on your shoes for more comfort.
2. Sexy yet comfortable lingerie
Although no one can see it, it makes a woman instantly feel sexy and luxurious inside knowing you are wearing Victoria Secret/La Senza. Always get measured every time you are out there shopping for new lingerie. Not only does it change your posture, it makes your clothes on the outside look put together and your girls perky. Good quality lingerie last longer if treated with care.
3. Little black dress
Every woman should at least own one in their wardrobe. You can never be wrong wearing this on any occasion. It’s a classic staple. You can dress it down or make it elegant depends on the accessories you add on. Also invest on tailored dresses and flowy dresses for the warm months. No revealing of too much skin. Less is more at work. Especially at work!
4. Cardigans and blazers
Invest in tailored blazers and warm/light cardigans. They will instantly add flair to your work outfit. Get them in different colors, designs and fabric as they will never go out of style. Wear the light pastel spring colors in the summer and the dark, warm tone colors in the fall/winter. Blazers make you look like you mean business.
5. Chiffon tops
Chiffon tops are the easiest to wear regardless of the woman’s body type as it always accentuates a woman’s natural form. They come in different colors and you can wear it casual or elegant. Put on a cardigan or blazer on top of it, tuck it in or let it flow. They come in different designs as well. You can choose to have with bows or tie or cowl neck. They are mostly affordable too.
6. Skirts
Not only are they sexy but they are also a breath of fresh air wearing pants/trousers all week. They come in different styles and designs. Invest in black/neutral/designed pencil skirts with the length just an inch above the knee. Anything shorter than that is inappropriate and screaming for attention. Pair them up with an opaque/sheer nude/black tights and heels/knee high boots.
7. Pants/trousers
They are easy to wear and comfortable. Pair them up with a chic top and belt. A cardigan/blazer and nice ankle boots/pumps to complete the look. Ladies, leggings are not work pants! Unless you are a yoga instructor but absolutely no leggings. You will get unwanted attention and for the wrong reasons. Hello HR?
8. Jewelry/accessories/purses
Wear classic jewelry like a pair of pearl earrings or nice gold necklace on very important days at work (meeting with the boss or making a presentation in the boardroom in front of VIPS). Or statement bold chunky accessories like necklace or bangles or chandelier earrings on days you feel casual. You can buy them at affordable women’s department stores. Scarves and purses can also change the way you look. If you're petite, stay away from oversize bags. They will drown you. When worn properly, this could make your OOTD pop.
9. Perfume
Your scent does leave an impression. You want that impression to be a big yet good one. Invest in long lasting designer perfume that will last you all day. Stay away from perfumes that emit a dizzying effect/overwhelming smell to others. This will cause a distraction at the office. Get samples from perfume stores and test it out before splurging a whole bottle. Coupled with good hygiene, perfumes should never be used as substitute for soap and water, ladies! BO is a no no in the workplace. Your boss might send you home to take a shower! Noooo way.
10. Skincare/Make up/Nail polish
Beautiful skin says a lot about you. If you have good skincare regimen and make up at home, it will show on your everyday dealings with co workers and customers. Don’t go overboard on your make up skills looking like Pennywise or go to work with uber long witch nails. They look and sound cringy. Go with the natural make up look.
Lastly, the wardrobe is not complete without confidence. Don’t let the clothes wear you, honey. How you carry yourself will bring you places. People notice. Chin up, strut your stuff and work it, woman!
