When it comes to clothing malfunctions, when is it right and wrong to inform someone?

Context to my situation: Today, I was sitting at lunch and a friend of mine (female) laid her head down. Her thong stuck WAY out of her pants, what many would call a whale tail. Now, sure, I have a slight crush on her and in some ways it's a nice thing to see, but mostly I was worried about others seeing and her being embarrassed.

But, wouldn't telling a girl that her thong is stick way out of her pants be utterly mortifying?

I've heard mixed answers from girls on GAG. Sometimes they appreciate being told, but I think it might differ from situation to situation.

When is it okay to let a friend know about an outfit malfunction? When a button is lose? When your undies are full-on out of your pants? Where do you draw the line because it would be too embarrassing?

If it's something minimal or something that they can't help then I don't tend to mention it, chances are they've noticed themselves and are in a deep wave of anxiety praying nobody notices.

Obviously if I feel a hint that they're flirting with me or it's been intentional I won't mention it.

But if it's noticeable and they can sort themselves out there and then or by going to the bathroom then I'd almost definitely mention it. I'd always prefer people to tell me even if it's gonna make me want to be swallowed up whole there and then, I appreciate people telling me. The earlier the better as well, I'd rather 5 people knowing and telling me rather than walking into a room with 30 people and everyone thinking the exact same thing but too embarrassed to say anything.

Just be discreet and follow it up by helping them out to ease the worry x

A zipper down is a must, but that can be awkward for some people (I just laugh when it happens to me because, I mean, its a zipper. a zipper. but some people don't even like showing their ankles, so to clear the mood and not be rude, you gotta say "happens to the best of us". Or if a girl's skirt flies up with the wind and stays there (lmfao) you gotta DEFINITELY tell her, and once again lighten up the mood with a humorous joke like "When I wear skirts they fly up too" (cause you're a man). Shirts being on backwards which are barely noticeable, or even shoe laces being untied aren't things you have to comment on

If she is doing it on purpose, she wouldn't be happy you brought it up (somehow I'm leaning towards it being on purpose, but I don't know her).

I personally would also find it very awkward if my crush had to point out something like that, and that's me assuming she has a crush on you too.
