you want shoes with good arch support! that way your feet won't hurt as much by the end of the night and you won't risk twisting an ankle

With being 5' 10" back in my nightclub days I would more often than not wear either kitten heels or just sensible flats.

Thin heels, but then again, I live in Los Angeles. I went to some hipster nightclubs in New York and I always wore boots.
