Okay, so I will try to explain something. The thing is a while back, a black man posted a screenshot of his daughter (white skin) in braids like this and the white mom didn't like it. She said to take them off and everyone accused her of being racist. However, whenever a white girl does it, why does everyone think It's not okay?

That's confusing to me. So basically you have to have it done by a black person for it to be okay or you have to be half black for it to be okay? What's the deal? You do you. I personally find the hairstyle kind of ugly for white girls but you do you. Mind your business.

Box braid are uncomfortable and heavy, especially when they are done like that. I like them spaced out and jumbo size. I don't know why white girls wear their hair that way when they don't need that hairstyle.

As for the second picture, that black man is a troublemaker and was trying to stir stuff up on the internet. A lot of black men who festishize white women secretly hate themselves and also the white women they date, the same goes for us yellow black women. I have faced abuse and hate from the same darker men who want to be with me. They secretly want to prove you to hate them and think you're better, so I don't know what he and her talked about prior to that text message convo.

She thinks the hairstyle is ugly, that is her opinion. let her style the baby's hair the way she wants to, she's the mom.

Some black people call straight hair flat, boring and claim it reminds them of dog hair when they want to be rude. I think the black baby daddy gets on her nerves and they probably fight a lot, so he started stuff to make her look bad. If you’re black or part black, then box braids are a part of your culture. If you’re white however, these type of braids are not really a part of your culture. Tbh I have nothing against cultural exchange; it’s natural and it is how so many current day cultural traditions have come to be. But I think the reason why black people are sensitive about white people appropriating black styles like box braids, is because for the longest time these styles were seen as “ghetto” and “ratchet” and “unprofessional” when done on black women. There’s even stories of black women being fired from jobs because their hair wasn’t “professional” (aka straight or white looking) enough. So black women have suffered from discrimination because of their hair and have been stereotyped because of certain hairstyles. So for them to go and see that the same styles that they were looked down upon for wearing, are now being regarded as fashionable and “avant-garde” just because they’re being done on white women now, is insulting. So I definitely understand why people are against white women wearing box braids. I think as a general rule, white women should just avoid this hairstyle because it is insensitive. Obviously it’s not the end of the world, but it doesn’t sit right with me. I’m not black though so at the end of the day it’s black womens’ call but this is just my perspective on it.

I practically snorted when I saw your closing line to this rant. “Mind your business”, yet you made this post, very much NOT minding your business. That’s what’s confusing me, personally. Now that that’s out of the way, Let me help you out a bit, by saying that you are very much missing the “bigger picture” of the image you shared. This little girl is mixed, and 9/10 when the mom is white, she has no idea what to do with her child’s textured hair. I imagine that the dad took his kid to get her hair braided because her mother is unwilling to learn how to tame it. So here is where the issue comes in — mom rejected a huge part of her child’s cultural background. By insisting on getting the braids taken out, it shows that she is another unfortunate case of “white woman wants little mulatto babies, but doesn’t want their struggles”. She carving a path for her daughter not to embrace being a woman of color, to feel shame about it, and to lean towards her white side. THIS is the problem. Not how white women look with box braids and why you feel it’s so stupid and unfair for them to be shamed for wearing the style. I wish you had made a conscious effort to understand the situation, before you skittered off online to vent as if their problem is affecting you. This post is very tone deaf, and completely insensitive on your part.

with the specific case you mentioned it’s likely that the mixed daughter has her father’s hair or at least something close to it. He is doing what’s best to keep it healthy as a young girl, in protective braids.
I’m sure if it was something closer to her moms he wouldn’t have felt the need to do that at all. Is the mom racist? I don't know. But it’s weird how she had a baby by a black man while refusing his culture at the same time.
I doubt she’s even aware of how to take care of her daughters hair. Doesn’t look like she’s interested in learning either. And that’s... bad. To say the least.

But anyway I don’t agree with white people wearing black hairstyles for cultural reasons but even on a practical level... these styles are primarily to manage and manipulate coily/kinky hair. So a lot of these white girls end up with damage because their hair is too straight and loose to support the styles in the first place.
And with that being said, no I don’t like it or support it but I’m not going to go out of my way to be an asshole or even let the individual know my opinion unless they ask. I think white girls with box braids look like clowns. The style simply isn’t made for their hair texture. It doesn’t look good on them, and because their hair is structurally different it’ll probably cause some of their hair to fall out. It’s fine for people who are mixed with black to wear the style, but they should look at their hair texture first and see if they’re a good fit for the style. Box braids can be very heavy and if done wrong they can be very tight. They can cause temporary hair loss or permanent traction alopecia. Essentially the style is not meant for straight hair.

People can wear their hair however they want. However they need to be aware that in certain parts of the US, you'd have a hard time getting a job because of your job. It wasn't that long ago that blacks people's hair was more than just hair. The enslaved braided maps and hid dry rice in their hair when they tried to escape slavery. There have been laws saying that black people had to shave or cover their hair because white people got offended that black people can do a variety of extravagant hair styles. Today states are just starting to pass laws saying that black people can not be discriminated against based on how their hair naturally grows from their scalp.

Too many people take from black people and we hardly EVER get credit for what we start. Obviously, people are free to do whatever they want. However there are certain looks that make people immediately categorize a person. Either positive or negative. Braids for example is something that is mostly seen in the black community. I'm not saying a white girl can't have braids, but she has to deal with certain judgments. Many see this look as "trashy" because many who have this look are unfortunately of lower class. So that white girl is going to be seen as such. Even if she herself may not be trashy at all. I think braids could look nice on anyone if they're done right. I think people with natural curly or course texture hair often look better in braids than people with naturally straight hair.

I also think that a lot of black people have issues with this style on white people because black people were often told by white people that this style is "trashy" or "unprofessional". It feels like double standards when white people start to adopt it. Because African Americans were originally robbed of their identity and background, many of them take great pride in their culture.

Hair style does not exclusively belong to one race. Some races can rock certain ones better than others, but personally I don't think white chicks can pull off this style in particular, but I am not against them doing it.

A stripper I know sent me a snap with her hairstyle like that asking what I thought and I was deadass blunt with it, but still conveyed it in a way that she knew I was just giving her shit for it and ultimately don't care what she does at the end of the day with it.

The thing is that I don't really care if the girl is white or black.

It is rather difficult for me to express an opinion on this. Not because I'm black, but because I'm a hairlover.
And you can't play through a womans hair when it's braided.
