Yes, I know this question might seem ridiculous at first hence but hear me out at first. Truthfully we live in a society where people get judged by simply what they are wearing on their bodies, only lucky people can afford the newest and fancier clothing while others doesn't get that luxury or you know they don't have new and clean clothes of their own.
We are forced to put on a mask not the covid mask but a metaphor mask where we need to create an alto ego for the fake acceptance of others around the world. But I wonder if every men and boy was forced to only wear a few set of clothing, while every women and girls were also forced to only wear a few select clothing. Basically like a strict uniform sort of dressed code for both male and female, how would society function would people still criticize others simply for their appearance or would people just live on living like nothing haven't affected them?
Hypothetically, if literally everyone around the world were forced to wear the exact same outfit would people still judge your appearance?

I wore a school uniform in middle school and high school. I wore a work uniform for a decade after that. You are always told the same thing that wearing a uniform somehow magically will stop people from judging how much money you have or what you wear or will make people stop judging, etc, but that has never been the case. Both my middle/high schools were located in wealthy areas but there were kids that got in to the school through testing. The vast majority of the kids would show off their wealth through their electronics, shoe choice, backpacks, car they drove (in HS) etc. People still judged your appearance because all the uniform did was make your clothes the same so if your hair or make-up was this or that or you were 'the fat kid, pimply kid, nerd kid, loner kid," you got judged, or bullied just the same. Sadly, those that were truly financially poor and say damaged their uniform and couldn't afford another, were unfortunately bullied for that. Even if the entire world went blind, people would still judge by feel or by the sound of the voice---you can't stop human nature.
People would still judge, but it wouldn't be about the clothing and style, which might be overall better? But look at school girl uniforms. They roll up sleeves, hike up skirts, wear different shoes, anything they can to personalize and individualize. Although with these examples you gave here, there is no room for any of that. I believe in freedom of expression. Except when it infringes on the rights of others too much. (Which is a very difficult line to establish. Some certainly take the moral high ground, but it may be more because it just suits their preferences.) What an image-obsessed race we are. I doubt that will ever change. But since I believe that style is an expression of oneself, and I am for most freedoms, I think just keeping things the way they are mostly is the fair thing to do.
Definitely sounds reasonable and fair, I also do having an individual style in my clothes I remember in middle school I was forced to wear a school uniform and I honestly hated it. While it might be easier to select from and it cheaper compared to constantly go shopping, it just feels like it lacks freedom of expression plus the school uniforms I worn were just straight up hideous.
I hear you. I am not a person that wants or needs to stand out at all. I blend in and never want to be centre stage. So I'm not quite sure if it's contradictory that I like the whole freedom of expression thing so much when it comes to one's style. Maybe it just boils down to the creativity, artistic, aspect of it, and there's nothing more to it. I think about aesthetics, beauty (in all things, not people specifically), great design, art, etc., so I do see the body as just being another venue, avenue, on which to drape. Yet, I really, really, loathe vanity. It's one of my biggest turn-offs in people. But on the other extreme, I also hate the idea of uniforms and conformity and unless someone works in law enforcement which is in part about safety, or for a company or business where uniforms which are a much-needed visual signal of a representative, then uniforms (such as school uniforms) are about controlling behaviour and trying to eliminate the rebellion of individualism.
There was a study I watched. It's the only one of its kind that I've seen; however, it was on a reaaaally stupid series on Netflix (not worth mentioning, so lame), where people who have no background in science pretend to be scientists with clipboards, essentially. Anyway, from a miniscule sampling of people, they found that females have positive reactions to men in uniform (that's obvious, right), but ONLY if the uniform is of a higher status job/position. Whereas with the men, it was hard to decipher, whether the conclusion should be that all women in uniform or not were roughly equally appealing, or whether it was on par with attraction to no-uniform women. Women like power, strength in men. But on average, men don't have the strong reaction to females who project strength. Men rate women higher than women rate men, unless the men stand out due to something like status of uniformed position. I am not drawn to men in uniform. I've always known this about myself. Because, again, I think it goes back to my dislike for conformity. Also 'power' is a bit dull to me. (I didn't really like GOT because, to me, it was all about power, and who's got it, and who's vying for it now.) It only matters to me in the real world, and in the real world I'm just not interested unless the person in power is fucking it up royally, then I wonder why, how, others support that person. Then I move on to analyzing not the person, but the others who so easily fall under their charm-brainwashing spell.
Yeah... Have you not heard of uniforms in school? We would wear the same exact thing and the judgements were still there. It was how your hair looked, if you were wearing makeup, what shoes you had, how short your skirt was, if you were wearing shorts or pants, piercings you had. It never stopped.
yeah definetly people would still be judged by their facial features, skin colour, etc etc. its a shame we live in such a world, i dont know why people can't just live by accepting everyone is different but we're still all humans, and dont need to be judged, and instead come together and make this world a better place, but ig those are just words. honestly a shame
You reminded me of the reason why we had costumes in our school - So poor kids who can't get many outfits don't get bullied for it - Just saying - I was one of those kids and I still made fun of fatsos and anyone I could get - Somehow I was still a good person one on one so me and those dudes are cool.. If that makes any sense it means that even then people would find something to make fun of someone else - I also am kinda richer and dress pretty well now so I'd rather not have everyone dress like me or go backwards and dress like someone else..
The significance of what you wear is context-dependent. For example, a guy wearing a basic suit and tie at a wedding isn't all that impressive, but take off that blazer, remove the tie, undo your top button and have drinks with mates and you'll still be the centre of attention at the pub. The way you dress says a lot about you, but judgements are made when it's significantly different - so yeh, people will naturally move their attention towards your as the next most visual thing in a world where we are all dressed the same.
PS, people that wear luxury branded stuff often look like huge try-hards. The only exception is Korean clothing - that shit drips hard
Girls and guys check each other out and remember better the ones that look better than avarage.
That means, even if their clothes are the same, the shape of the body and facial features will be the focus, more than clothes.
School uniforms are designed to stop the comparoson of clothes and minimize the showing off with expensive clothes and sexual attention between students. For example, some schools have hybrids that have the combination of skirts and shorts so the boys can't see the underwear up the skirts.
Technically yes. If we are all wearing the same clothing we aren't looking at clothes, we are still looking at an individual's physical features like size, weight, proportion, ethnicity, etc.
Of course they would. There would still be tall people, short people, trim people, overweight people, people with attractive faces, people with less attractive faces.
If everyone in the world were an exact genetic duplicate and indistinguishable from all the billions of other people in the world, humans would still find a way judge one another on something!
I would hope that we would be to busy criticizing the tyrant who controls what we wear. Sadly, I know that people will still find things to ridicule about each other.
There are situations where it’s a benefit. My guys where company polos on photo shoots. I read about a poor student who liked wearing the same thing as the rich kids. Gave him confidence.
