+1 yI say go for it! Here are the considerations:
1. Judgement of other people (incestuous, another lover, omg she has ink what a Jezebel, etc): sfw, you're somewhere around 40, you can make your own damn decisions about your body and what's important to you. If you meet someone who is truly interested in you, they are going to want to know more about your tattoos and why you got them, your brother who is so important to you, etc, etc. I wouldn't worry about what other people are thinking. A tattoo is a personal thing to you. It could be a picture of a cartoon marshmallow playing a rainbow violin on fire, and it means something significant to you, DGAF what other people think of marshmallows or violins, etc. I mean, are you getting a tattoo for yourself, or for other people? If you're getting it for us, I vote for a sheep over your heart.
2. Will you regret it later? My first look was at your age. If you were under 25, I would have advised more caution just because younger people tend to do things rashly they think are a good idea at the time. But I have to respect your age and experience that if you are thinking about this tattoo hard enough, then you are going to make the right decision for what matters to you.
I think over your heart is an appropriate place, and I can't think of a better one. If you are getting the classic heart with a ribbon tattoo, though, you could get it in the classic upper arm position as well.
Another thought and I'm not even sure if this is an actual option or just a really good business idea no one has done yet, but temporary tattoos are really good these days and you might be able to get a custom one done the way you want and try it out on your heart for a few weeks to see how your heart feels about it.

Your brother probably has the same name as 3 million other men. It's not a given that people will believe that tat was for your brother as opposed to one of those 3 million other dudes & that now you're just lying to hide the shame of having an exe's name on your body.
Some better ideas:
Get a locket necklace with a picture of him in it and wear it on your neck.
Get a bracelet with a note like, 'my brother.. blah blah' written on the inside.00 Reply
Anonymous(36-45)+1 yI think it's a beautiful thing that you want to do, but I personally think getting a heart tattoo over your chest with your brother's name could be a bit incestuous. I do believe that any guy who gets the chance to be intimate with you should know ahead of time about this tattoo and should be understanding of it.
The other option is to get the tattoo in a different place on your body, and you could always consider something other than a heart. Lots of flowers have deeper meanings - perhaps something here might be a good fit for how you feel about your brother? https://fieldofflowers.com/about-us/flower-meanings/10 Reply
Nothing weird about it, the best tattoos are those with meaning behind them. If it is meaningful and special to you screw what other people think, you don’t need to justify your tattoos to anyone. Sometimes tattoos are so personal that you may not even want to share the story behind them to people. I would suggest if you really want this tattoo get it and if you don’t want to explain the reason behind it to anyone then just say it has a lot of personal meaning and leave it at that.

It's a nice gesture, but almost every guy you date or meet will assume that the name represents an ex-lover, and you will have a difficult time convincing them otherwise. You should consider a symbolic representation, and in a less sensual place, say your shoulder or somewhere everybody can see but it's clear it's not *that* tatttoo
10 ReplyMaybe not the name but maybe if there is something that is his own custom like art signature.
Names are often too culturally binding and special for just tattooing. But something representing your brother. I think would be a far smarter and more culturally acceptable. Kinda like I agreed that if my niece gets A's and B's and stays out of trouble I'd agree to get the humming bird designed she made as a tattoo done by a close friend who does custom pieces.00 Reply
+1 ySince I presume only guys you're dating will see it. Except when wearing a bikini. Get something a bit more symbolic. Rather than a name or any word written.
You can spend some time looking through medieval symbols or something of that nature. Looking for something that has a meaning similar to how you feel about what your brother did.
You can also look for the Ancient Greek version of his name. Then have it written in the Greek alphabet or viking runes.00 Reply
Anonymous(25-29)+1 yI think it’d be weird. I think it’d be better if you did the tattoo on your left arm ( since the heart is located on the left) with a heart and center his name on the heart. Or maybe instead of a heart try getting a tattoo that symbolizes him like his zodiac sign his birthday or maybe a hobby he really liked (sports? Music? Painting?) something like that.

+1 yIt's fine. Even if u one day decide to date your brother it is your business, assuming he is over 18. I think in Star Wars the brother and sister were lovers for a while and that is like one of the most popular movies ever.

+1 yIt's not weird at all. If you feel strongly that it's wrong do it by your boobs then do it on another part of your body then. Maybe instead of a heart you can put his name inside of a ribbon to avoid the incest part.

Get it as a tramp stamp? j/k but that's what I thought of when you said "another part of your body". That and inner thigh.
I think the sentiment is fine, but something about the name being there makes it seem romantic. Maybe you could put something else there that symbolizes him?
10 ReplyIt's awesome that he helped you out a lot and having he's name is not weird. It becomes weird if you tell people first he's your brother and then the story. Give them the context first and then tell them he's your brother.
00 ReplyI think people see tattooed names and think romantic partners. Unless there is a date with it, as if for someone that has passed.
You can get it of course, but you will always be explaining it.00 Reply
+1 yNo absolutely not. That’s one of the loop holes I see when one of the basic tattoos rules says: don’t get someone else’s name tattooed on you. Unless it’s like it’s your daughters or your son or your siblings or maybe your mother‘s name and date of birth and date of death next to it. It’s all good.

Anonymous(30-35)+1 yUp to you. But I'd never in my life do that.
I have a tat for my brother, sister, and mom. But it's on my arm. And it's small and just a design to represent them. Not their names.
I'd never get a name tattooed on me.00 Reply1.7K opinions shared on Fashion & Beauty topic. If you have any doubt AT ALL about a tattoo, don’t get it! Those things are permanent!

Anonymous(36-45)+1 yNgl before I read your details the first thing I was thinking was some inbred ish lol. For someone like me it wouldn't matter tbh because I wouldn't date a girl with tats. I just don't like ink on flesh but that's just me.

+1 yIf you want to do something nice for your brother that doesn't permanently damaged your body, you can try giving him a gift or making him an appreciation card.

+1 yYou'd have to explain it everytime since for the general public it's a guys name. Maybe get a tattoo of something that reminds you of your brother instead?
00 Reply Yes, very weird. It would imply they're having an incestuous relationship.

I think it is weird if a woman gets ANYTHING tattooed on her heart.01 Reply- +1 y
ps - I would be disgusted if someone tattooed me on their body. That doesn't honor me at all. Keep a picture of me or something... write me a poem... just be in my life and love me... tattooing my name into your flesh? That is just creepy and insane.
I hear about freaks tattooing names or photos of deceased loved ones into their flesh. How does that help anything? How does that do them any honor. I tell loved ones... if I die... don't dare tattoo my name on yourself. Doing something I hate DOES NOT honor me in any way... it DISHONORS me.

+1 yYeah. Because your heart is underneath your breasts.
10 Reply It could, cause your heart is in your breast area which can be odd to some people if they don't know what's going on
