The girl is correct. What constitutes "pretty" is subjective. My girlfriend is Chinese and she has a Chinese female friend named Rainbow. I have told her that I think Rainbow is very pretty and my girlfriend says all Chinese people think Rainbow is ugly. So, what you expressed was an opinion and not a fact, and I would not assume anything about the motivations of the girl who made that comment to you.
