There's a difference between "messy" and "unkempt". Based on observation, when people say "messy", they're usually referring to hair that looks disorganized but also maintained; no one wants to run their hand through a head of hair and get covered in dandruff and/or lose hairs. The mystique to messy hair comes from the illusion of being carefree about one's hair, while actually keeping it well-groomed and clean. Truly messy hair ends up being "unkempt"; there is a sense of having little or complete disregard for basic hygiene, because "why bother?"

I don't know but I epitomized messy hair. I could still get dates when I was single. What I do is I wake up with a bedhead and I just sort of style it just enough to give the illusion as though it was on purpose: "fashionably disheveled".
