Lmfaoooooo. I worked at both in the 2000s. That was definitely their gameplan. Not saying we were all dimes or anything, but we all were at least presentable. I was recruited while shopping there, and later, on slow days, they’d send me and a girl around the mall to just find attractive people and try to recruit them. The whole business model was that they don’t advertise, their customers are the billboard. Women’s jeans only went up to size 11, and they were really a 9. Guys, nothing over a 36 waist. The upper management was all ridiculously young. Our store manager was 25, district manager was only 26, and the regional manager was only 30. But the whole deal was that it was run by middle aged people who actually knew what they were doing, and every day, the store would get faxed a gameplan for the day, and all the manager did was see that it was executed. Like “put this mannequin exactly 6 feet from this wall, and 8 feet from that wall, and dress it with items x, y, and z.” Literally spelled out every last detail, no thought required. The district manager once told us “you guys need to understand, you guys are like DEMIGODS to our customers.” SLOW DOWN, CHIEF😂😂😂 We’re a bunch of assholes folding jeans and making $7.50 an hour and get a 20% discount on clothes. I’m here to meet chicks, period, lmao.
But yeah, I don’t know if they changed the model or not. I haven’t seen an A&F in years, they shut my old one down and put in a sushi restaurant, haha. Hollister is still there, but it’s not the draw it used to be. I used to feel like I worked at the coolest store in the mall (making it the 3 billionth coolest job overall😂😂😂), but now I feel like the era and the whole vibe has passed. It’s a shame, because I thought it was a great look and a great vibe, but that’s just the way style goes. Hopefully they just hire anyone now and it’s not such a “beautocracy” (I just made that up, I feel pretty good about it😝). I remember my interview, it was a group interview, recruits and applicants alike, and I think they were just feeling out if we were cool or not. One guy looked like Milton from the old movie Office Space, lmfao, and he was wearing Bermuda shorts with dress shoes and dress socks, and had a cellphone holster on his belt. He was NOT hired😂 They asked us one question: if you were a Michael
Jackson song, which one would you be? I said “Smooth Criminal”, and they still fucking hired me lmfao. But yeah, at the time, “the cool kids” wore those clothes and lived (posed) that lifestyle, so that was what they wanted, “the cool kids.” Now, I don’t know if those brands carry the same weight, if “the cool kids” of today are wearing it, so maybe the image consciousness went by the wayside. I hope so, because it’s pretty damn rich to be told to only hire cool, hot people by THIS GUY….

no but you do have to wear their clothes and have confidence enough to THINK that you're hot. 😁
