What kind of clothing would you want to wear for your wake?

Something that always ticked me off when my father died was that they dresses him in a suit for his wake - he hadn't wore one for almost twenty years, that wasn't his style.

At least for my sister I took matters in my hand and we dressed her in her usual style - a nice t-shirt, and a smart jacket.

I like what you decided for your sister. I think there's a level of comfort in seeing her as she was and would want to be remembered.

When my mother was sick, she asked that the casket be closed. She was very clear. "I want people to remember me the last time they saw me when I was healthy." I like the thought. And, I think you were true to your sister's memory. You learned from the experience with your dad.

Wakes, funerals, visitations, and even grief are for the living. Nobody can do anything for the remains. While it is customary to follow the deceased wishes (if the deceased voiced any), the family is the final arbiter of death care details including how their loved one is dressed. For open casket viewings, since families often want to remember their loved ones looking their best, they often choose suits for men and dresses for women. I've casketed people wearing jeans and sports jerseys, sweats, pajamas, bathing suits, just about everything. As for me, I'll leave it to my survivors to decide.

I want to be in my Navy Dress Blues or my Law Enforcement Class A's. I want the final time anyone sees me to be a reminder that I dedicated my life to serving and protecting others and for that memory to set an example to those remaining to live a God-honoring and honorable life.

I don't want a wake! Funerals are such a huge waste of money and huge burden on some families. For me it's just cremation and then a small family celebration of life party. My ashes would end up in the Gulf or on my favorite golf course. It is all set up in a will that my husband and I have.

It bothers me too to hear about someone being put in a suit for their wake when that person obviously disliked suits.
