Is It bad for the relaxed ends to shed off without cutting while transitioning?

I transitioned 2 years ago, and I never got the chance to cut off the relaxed ends bc I was scared, and I thought I wasn't seeing any changing so gave up and just did protective styles. I just have a split ends My hair is almost as long when it natural was as child. Have any of you experience this

I waited until I had at least 3 inches of regrowth before I cut my hair. I was so glad to chop off the straight hair. And there was a lot of it!
It started growing at a reasonable rate after that. I switched between wearing it in braidouts and marley twists for convenience. I keep it just past my shoulders now (in its curly state), and trim it when it grows past this.
