How to make wavy/curly hair NOT clump together and have a softer look?

Nothing I've tried has worked so far, and most products only seem to encourage clumping. I like a soft, brushed out look rather than a clumpy one. Has anyone figured this out?

Before showering when you hair is dry, brush it completely.


After showering while your hair is still damp (but not dripping wet), comb it gently.


Your curls should dry in the place your comb left them.


If that doesn’t work, then I don’t understand the question.
