It seems like a lot of people have insecurities about their physical appearance.

Impossible to answer. Beauty standards would still exist regardless. There was stories being told about white women being sold into Africa and they would strip them naked, put them on a stage where everyone could see them and admire their beauty. For some reason, even before cameras existed, white people were just always seen as more attractive.
There was also stories about white men but I don’t wanna share those because they are disturbing to me.
