Does anyone know how to deal with black hair without it looking ghetto?

When I was little, I used to wear my hair in nothing but braids because my mom didn't know what to do with my hair because she was mixed and had mixed people hair, so obviously her hair is different from mine. Well, when I hit about 12, I was tired of the painful tugging and combing and everything, so mom suggested a relaxer/perm whatever. I get my hair relaxed for like the rest of middle school and all of high school basically, and I was okay with it. But now that I'm 20 years old, the relaxers just aren't cutting it anymore. I hate straight hair and I don't want it anymore, but I don't want to go back to painful combing and tugging with the giant afro puff. I don't want to wear wigs, or sew-ins, or weaves. I just want to know what I can do with my hair to like it? When I curl it with the flat iron, I kinda like it, but everyone likes natural curls. And I wasn't fortunate enough to have long, beautiful locks like my mother and a lot of her relatives. I'm just at a loss. Should I shave all my hair off and start over? Should I just I don't know, try my best to grow my hair to a certain point and then cut the relaxed hair off? Like I don't know.. mom can't find a good hairdresser, and the last time I went to the salon was February 2022 and that was curtesy of my father, but the women there were rude and snotty and almost burned me really bad. I just don't know what to do about my hair anymore.
