Why I can not type without my long nails? I had naturally long nails and yesterday one broke and I was obligated to make every nail short?

I heard that our keyboards adapt to our typing style. So it may make some letter hit boxes bigger or it may position the hitbox where you type the letter the most. So maybe you're typing the right thing but based on your keyboards adjustments, you're not¿

I'm not sure if you mean with a keyboard or touchpad, but...

Because when you have longer nails your typing adjusts to accommodate them and you learn to type a certain way. So, when the length suddenly changes and your nails become shorter, it takes a re-adjustment to be able to type with them at a different length.

Most people with shorter nails tend to type closer to their fingertips, while people with longer nails tend to type more with their finger pads. But typing is very much a "feel" thing, so whenever something suddenly changes, it just feels off and your typing oftentimes begins to get sloppy.

I remember one time when I got lazy and I let my fingernails grow "long" (for a guy - only 3-4mm lol) my typing got sloppy because I usually type with my fingertips and my nails were getting in the way. I cut them and everything was back to normal. It goes both ways.

@coolcatmar1 Yeah. Unfortunately, there aren't really any tips anyone can give you to correct it, because it is a feel thing and everyone is a little different in that respect, but it just takes getting used to is all. 🙂

I love long nails on a woman! That’s awesome you have them (had them). I’m surprised you could type good with them! With that said, awwww you should have kept your natural long nails, and gone to a salon and they could have added a tip and filed to the length and shape to match your others and do a nail dip and finish.


If they are all short now, you could hit up a good salon and get acrylic tips near the very end, id recommend dip and finish. The dip is not supposed to be harmful to your natural nails, whereas acrylics and the powder are if you did full acrylics? Then they can grow out underneath in a couple months of treatments?

I think it's habit because your body programs itself to type with the bodily lengths you usually use. I got my nails manicured for the first time for my grade 12 graduation from high school and for around 8 days or so I could not type or use a pencil properly because I had never had nails that long and hard before. I have difficulty using long nails and you have difficulty using short ones, because I'm used to long nails and you are used to short nails. You will adjust to this if you don't grow back your nails soon. It's a question of habit and not of hand and nail shape.

I play guitar and have to clip my nails every week, otherwise I find it really hard to play. There is a girl I give lessons to that has long nails and just like you, she broke two on her car door. Now she has a really hard time playing. I couldn't believe how well she played with them long! It has be baffled.

Your nails were thinner than your fingers. You didn't have to worry about the skin touching other letters.
