How can I make my nail's free edge not grow so quickly?

The free edge of my fingernail, or the white strip where your nail is disconnected from the bed, appears very early on my fingernail. This makes them extremely easy to get dirty and I constantly need to clean under them multiple times a day. Is there anyway to let my nails grow with the free edge forming so fast? It hurts to keep them super short, and growing them all the way out isn't my thing.

I know you said growing them out isn’t your thing but nails are there for protection so maybe still keep them short but just let them grow out a little longer like just until the ends of your finger tips? And then that way it might give the skin some time to grow and attach underneath so overtime the white strip will decrease?

Trim them. Really, if that is a major life concern you should be so damn grateful.
