Why do people say that being alt (ex. goth, punk, metalhead) is a phase?

Someone told me that it’s a phase but they have purple hair and tattoos.

Because most people stop playing fantasy roles and start interacting with the real world sooner or later. The real world isn't a comic book. You have to grow out of middle school sooner or later.

It's a drag being discounted as an immature idiot by grown ups when you want to get ahead in life.

At the same time, most people continue to identify with who they were in high school because those were their formative years and often the most fun years of their lives. That's the music and clothing styles they will always like.
But they usually tone it down eventually as they start interacting with the real world and become more mature.
They can still have their own style, though. You don't have to become a robot.
And they may still enjoy going to functions and events where they can embrace their full, alt identity. There's nothing wrong with that.

It can be a phase or it can be a way individuals decide to live their life. You can have one girl be full on goth from school until she finishes university and then she’s back to undyed hair and her or most of her tats covered. She might at weekends go out in the same Goth styling or it might be a season thing at a festival etc.

Some will full time stay with the lifestyle and be happy with it.

Some try it, decide they want to try something else, etc.

At the time being Goth is who I was. It defined what I wore, the kind of music I liked. I really liked the chilling adventures of Sabrina especially the weird sisters. I got piercings, I naturally had dark hair and fair skin but still used makeup to complete my look. But when I went to college I made new friends and that wasn’t who I was anymore. So it was kind of a phase, it doesn’t mean that wasn’t who i was in high school. I’m just not that girl anymore

I was told being into metal was a phase when I was 8 or 9 years old. Now I am 34 and listen to more metal than ever before. judgmental idiots will always be narrow-minded.
