I think it's a compliment. It's synonymous with adorable or charming.
Cute is my favorite kind of sexy and beautiful.

Most women I've known like to be considered cute, to wear cute clothes to have cute hair style, drive a cute car, etc..

I mean, is it condescending or offensive for men to THINK of women as cute, no necessarily to CALL a woman cute.

There are better ways to compliment a woman, depending on the circumstances.

It's fine. It's nice. But make sure it's used at the right time haha. Getting dressed up and flirting with your guy only to be told your cute rather than sexy or hot is gonna be a problem lol

It started off the break up of my last relationship actually. He stopped really appreciating when I made effort to dress up. And I love sexy lingerie. And it started effecting my confidence. I trued communicating how I felt (nicely). And he started mumbling "you look nice" urgh. "Nice" is worse than "cute" in this context. And if I sent him a picture he would say cute. When he used to say sexy.

If I was getting dressed to go my friends? Then cute is fine. If we was joking around then "your so cute" would be fine. It's quite affectionate in those contexts.
Not sure about the younger generations? Wonder what they think of the word?

In response to your update about men thinking cute rather than saying cute. I guess you would need to ask the guys what that words mean to them? I think it is a nice word. I think if a man is thinking "she's cute" it again adds an affection and emotion that is more bonding than "hot" and "sexy" which men can think and directly links to thoughts of sex. So they don't need affection or emotion with those thoughts.

Generally I think it’s charming. It feels as if they like you on a deeper level, it’s more than just a physical thing.

However, I think it does depend on the situation. A guy who ghosted me started giving me that
”aaawww she’s so cute”
expression whenever I saw him. This was because I work in the same building as him, so I sent a message to say not to be so nervous when he saw me as I wasn’t about to lose it with him, it is what it is and it didn’t matter.

THAT was incredibly condescending. When I’m trying to be kind to a guy who’d been a jerk, to keep it civil and professional at work. THAT was not charming that patronising and made me want to punch that expression off his face.

Cute can be used as a compliment or an insult depends intite on the context saying "Weeeell aren't you just cute as a button!: when someone is trying to look cute ( I don't know Christmas sweater and elf ears/hat) is in the realm of complementary.
Where as saying " isn't that cute" in a moment tone when someone shows you something they are proud of or worked hard on is a form of discrediting their acomplishment/opinion/ or them directly and is an insult.

Or to put it simply, if you dressed your best and went out to the club and all the hot girls called you "a little cutie" and treated you like a little brother instead of a man you'd be upset, so it goes without saying women don't always want to be called cute either.

cute can be demeaning if it's ALL people see you as. there are cute serial killers and war criminals, and there are "rough" people who will charm you more than any pearly white smile will

people can get offended if they think you use their cuteness to minimize their talents or problems.

you can say it's overreaction, I'd say it's important to read the room when you try to compliment someone. telling someone they have a perfect ass can be good, but not in front of their protective partner.

compliment people on what they put effort into in a sincere way and you'll probably never get a reasonable complaint in your life, let alone offense

What woman doesn't want "cute" clothes and shoes, for example? And if they do, it means they want to look cute.

Men are bigger, stronger, and have facial hair. From their pov, women's size, smooth skin, delicate features, voices, mannerisms, even their pluckiness and playfulness, is cute.

Historically, men have had cute names for women - kitten, peaches, pumpkin, cupcake, baby, etc. Even adding a "y", "ie" or "ita" to their name or nickname is diminutive.

Some women these days may find such diminutive names mildly offensive because they can seem condescending or dismissive of their abilities. But men can think of women as cute and cuddly while recognizing their competence and worth. And most are fully aware that women are not children, pets, or mere sexual playthings.

I always liked the lady-gentleman game where men made women feel safe and secure and treated them like they are fragile, even though women are fully capable of doing things for themselves. That game just accentuates men's masculinity and women's femininity. But I would never denigrate women's intelligence or abilities.
