Does hair dye damage hair?

I have never dyed my hair and feel like i need a change, i want to lighten it since my natural hair colour is very dark, my question is does hair dye damage the hair and cause hairloss?

It's very possible. My aunt was 87 when she died 5 years ago and she was always colouring her hair dark red but, I noticed in her last few years, she was starting to go bald! However, as she was a beautician, there's a chance that other things she did to her hair caused the loss, too. I know that she would go a long time without washing her hair because it took her so long to set it. So, maybe that damaged it.
