I can't stand it looking so dirty from people walking on it with their shoes on.

take outside and pressure wash (gentle) or use a bristle brush and appropriate soap, scrub, rinse clean with hose. dry immediate by hanging up and sunning.
I need to do that this year.
Have it steam cleaned
@In_Trance
How do I get it steam cleaned by someone 🤔?
@In_Trance
It's kinda big. About 8 ft. X 10 feet. Will the cleaners clean something that big?
Totally get this, dirty rugs drive me crazy too 😅
Use a carpet/upholstery cleaner spray and a damp (not wet) microfiber cloth or sponge. Clean the rug in small sections, blotting instead of soaking so moisture doesn’t reach the fake wood. Slip a plastic sheet or trash bags under the rug edges as protection. Let it dry with fans and open windows, flipping or lifting corners so air circulates. If it’s very dirty or thick, a professional cleaner is safest.

How wide and how long if you have a hand rail that is wide enough is up high enough , so it doesn't hit the ground you can always hang it over that. And if you get 409 carpet cleaner that's stuff kicks , butt you can spray that on there , take a scrub brush , scrub it hit it with your garden hose , but make sure it's sunny day because you wanted to dry before it gets cold again
If you are a little bit stronger, I would say, take it to the car, wash, throw it app Uber one of their railings and hit it with the car, wash 1, but you need to know what you're doing so, you don't care it or shred it apart, you got to keep your tip away. From it just right and still be able to get all the dirt out. And you would freak out , see how much dirt , that you actually get out when using a car wash or pressure washer but you gotta be very careful. So I say don't do that way
It depends what it is made out of. I gave area rugs that are polypropylene that I can bring outside and hose it down and use some dish soap and scrub it. If is a wool or wool blend it should be professionally cleaned.
