You have to look like you are there to do the job. If you’re an executive then wear a nice suit, if you’re a cop then wear the uniform and badge. You don’t want to drive up to a mechanic shop and see a mechanic wearing flip-flops and a tank top instead of a mechanic's uniform, that’s not going give you very much confidence in his abilities. if you hire an attorney, you don’t want him showing up to court looking like a bum

Obviously the clothes you wear, but also it's just an intangible thing. Some people just have a look, or a manner, that makes them seem serious and professional, regardless of what they happen to be wearing.
