Why is my crush being such a jerk? Please answer !?

There's this guy I like. He was in my science class last semester. I told him I like him and that he doesn't have to like me back but I don't want stuff to be awkward so we should just be friends - he said sure. Acted like my friend until.. Second semester. He started acting cold towards me. Before I told him I like him, he was like this sometimes.. But after I told him, we were like good friends. We chose our courses together, I taught him science so he could pass with a good mark. Heck, I got it from a 68 to an 87 :/ . Second semester started. We have two classes together and he's acting cold. I asked for help in math and he made up excuses even though I would deprive my self of sleep to help him understand science concepts. I told my friend to tell him I don't like him. My friend texted him and then sent me a screenshot. My crush said okay at that. All my friends think he cares that I don't like him, but I don't know. He's getting thirsty for popularity too. He was a good student in his other classes. Now he's lying so he can skip and he liked my "lms for a tbh " status and I gave him a thoughtful tbh and he ignored it. This popular girl said he's nice and he went all out to thank her. Today he was being an ***. My friend thinks he wants to be an *** - not that he is one but he wants to put up that badass impression. Lool that's totally not working. Why is he acting like this? I helped him so much and now that I missed a day of school and need help he's "joking around". I mean joking around is okay.. but he could possibly.. I don't know.. help me after that. He's lazy when it comes to me. On his birthday I wrote " happy birthday ! I hope you have a great one :D " and on mine he wrote " hbd". :( This is killing me. I've tried to get over him a lot this year but it's never worked. It's like he knows exactly when I'm drifting away so he could pull me back. I'm honestly going to throw mud at him on the last day of school. I'm getting annoyed >:(

'I told him I like him and that he doesn't have to like me back' - here you go, he did what you told him. lesson learnt? never say such a thing to a guy EVER again, that's a killer. do NOT help him out, do NOT try to be nice to get his sympathy in return, cause that won't happen and that's not how guys think. just ignore him from now on, and meet other guys. don't help them out too, don't make yourself so available, cause it reads 'disposable'.

that or you should have just been direct and then let him respond. now you dk if he sad ok bc he thought thats what you wanted, or bc its what he wanted.

tell him ONCE more that you like him. ask him how he feels. if he's not interested, move on.

He may have thought that by saying you liked him and helping him with homework you were trying to obligate him to either be attracted to you or help you with homework in return.

How had he been acting cold before you told someone to tell him you don't like him?
