Why do you think we're so awkward around each other?

My crush and I talk to each other basically the whole time we're together *if there are other people there.* Every time he jokes or tells a story it's basically to me - in general when he talks he focuses on me in some way. I do the same and we're super talkative, laugh a lot, etc. Yet when it's just the two of us we are... kind of awkward, like we can have a conversation about anything but it feels weird like neither of us knows what to do or say or something. Sometimes we just awkwardly glance at each other and then I'll throw in some topic so we have something to do haha.

I mean we can hang out for hours - like even go to Walmart and just wander - but especially when we're with people and they disappear, he suddenly goes all quiet and I kind of do too. Not always but enough that I've noticed. Its not like "oh I want to leave" quiet - I'm pretty sure he really really likes me, God willing - I like him a lot too. I think maybe more like nervous quiet.

For me personally, awkward silence means you aren't that comfortable yet. This isn't bad or anything. It seems you both do like each other, but the awkward silence just means you are both still shy regarding certain parts of self. Here's a good analogy: When you talk and share about yourself (more so with eye contact), you are basically revealing the nakedness of your heart. So you both are emotionally exposing yourself. The shyness is a normal reaction. It just shows their are still comfort barriers that need to be broken down. Make sense?

Yes thanks - I think he's nervous, possibly wants to get closer but can't, and I end up all nervous too. He often wants to take random side trips with just me (Walmart, McDonald's, wherever - just to hang out with me I guess) but it's when people leave and we didn't expect to be alone that suddenly we're like "... oh." Once I was in his friends' garage with him and his friends went upstairs and we played ping pong and when the ball went into the corner and I went to retrieve it, he kind of followed me unnecessarily and stood too close and I kind of was unsure what to do so I inched around him (moment of tension) and then he wanted to play xbox with me hahaha.
He gives me plenty of eye contact and we get each other really well and are comfortable so I am a bit confused by the random awkwardness unless what countrydude said is accurate.

I think the awkwardness is more shyness. based on our conversations and your other posts. I know you like each other I think maybe he wants to kiss you and worried about rejection. or he isn't sure how to initiate with out offending you.

In the past when no one's been around he's randomly played with my hands and stuff (but only rarely). Now he gets quiet and kind of awkward and at least twice while we were walking I looked at him and either he was zoning out and snapped back to reality or he was checking me out bc his eyes shifted up really fast. And he's careful not to touch me but not always.

Yes @CasualFriday I Agree with what he is saying as well. and regarding your friend "either zining out, or checking you out" I m willing to bet he was checking you out :) wich is perfectly normal. and when he followed yo to get the ball. Im thinking he wanted a kiss.

I've noticed something really interesting. When it's just us and close friends (his brother and a best guy friend) he'll comfortably touch me like tonight I was reaching over him to do something on his laptop and he didn't move out of the way at all, just left his arms basically resting very much against mine - like it was almost intimate in a way, not just brushing but full-on on/next to my arms and hands (his arms were really warm too) but he moved away really fast all of a sudden and I looked up and his other buddies had showed up. Guess he doesn't want anyone to notice.

Also a friend of his brother showed up (who knows me) and was like hey guys let's go to subway (to me and the brother) and my guy was like don't leave me (was doing something on the computer) and we were like we'll be right back and we stayed outside eating and came back in and he looked like of upset and was like "you guys were gone for a long time" and didn't cheer up for like 5-10 min.

I thought so too - glad you agree! He just looked grumpy and uncomfortable even though honestly that guy is *noooooooot* my type. And he kind of looked like he was glaring at him but like subtly I don't know how to describe it - like kept sort of watching him with this look on his face. I was honestly surprised at his reaction.

The awkward silence, it mostly means that neither of you want to say something that sounds stupid to the other, its natural and normal and lots of couples do that, the trick is when both of you can be silent and be completely comfortable with it

It's like we're great when we have something to talk about but when the conversation falls silent - see my comment to CasualFriday below, it has more detail.
He even jokes about couples - like after taking a sip of my coffee, "I don't get why couples refuse to share drinks. I mean, you were just making out like 5 minutes ago!"
