You need balls to do it my friend, but walk up to her and make a comment about her, maybe her smile or the way she dresses. Not a compliment, more a comment. Like "I really love how you dress so positive, I always notice you from across the corridor". This will get her thinking, because it's not a straight out compliment compared to most guys.
Then try to get chatting to her, don't ask direct questions, only assumptions. Like "so you must really like English lit classes a lot"... Any assumption. Because right or wrong it means the conversation will not die. Then after a while and the reaction is good, you can ask for her number.
by the way there's a lot safer ways to do this. You can just take it in stages, one time introduce yourself, next time talk more etc. That is probably a better bet. Good luck!

"Hi, I'm (your name), and I think you're cute" *with a friendly smile
Even if she is somewhat confused, I bet she will smile back. When she does, ask her if she has boyfriend. If she doesn't, ask for her name and then her number. Then leave when the going is good. You can then text her in about an hour.
If she has a boyfriend, act a little upset (but in a playful way), say aw and walk away. Then if you have the confidence to pull it off, call back to her saying "Tell me when you're free."
Well I wouldn't do it when her friends are around because that makes it hard and she won't want to be judged if she does take your number. I would just go up to her and introduce yourself and say that she is cute and ask for her number so you can talk.
