Why are random men always saying hello to me on the street/stores etc?

n I never say "hello" or "how are you" to people I don't know on the streets and in stores, so that's why I'm confused as to why they do it. Its not as if they do it as a way to pursue me because that's all they say. My friends have witnessed this happen and they think its actaully quite funny.
