For me, "you ARE beautiful" means you look beautiful no matter what you wear, whether or not you have make up on, no matter what your hairstyle is while "you LOOK beautiful" means you only look beautiful as of the moment like for example the way you dressed up or the way you fixed yourself that's why it's better to say "You are beautiful" to pertain directly to the person, but if you noticed that she spent effort to look extra beautiful, you may say "You look beautiful" as a sign of appreciation.

I think "you are beautiful" is better. Because if someone says "you look beautiful" to me it seems more superficial and based on what I look like at the exact moment, but if someone says "you are beautiful", I feel like that could be about internal or external beauty and it's also a more permanent statement, not just in a fleeting moment.

You ARE beautiful because it could include looking beautiful both on the inside and outside. Plus, you LOOK beautiful implies that you aren't always beautiful but look beautiful on that particular occasion.

If I used "handsome" in place of beautiful, I guess I'd want to hear the "your are" version more so than the "you look." Still though, "you look carries a special meaning sometimes, too.

I never thought much of it but one day someone told me "I looked pretty, today" and after they walked away one of my friends said, "today? What? Were you ugly yesterday?" So now ever since then when someone gives me a compliment but adds the "today" at the end of it I can't help but think of what my friend told me.

Because I think 'you are beautiful' seems to be thrown around everywhere willy nilly now to make a girl feel good.. without them being genuine lol.
Like don't get me wrong that's still so so nice to hear and will always make the girl feel good.. Just if a guy was like 'you look beautiful today' or 'that's a beautiful picture of you' it just seems more sincere to me haha.
