This is basically my feeling on the matter of hitting ANYONE- in a physical sport where it's generally considered acceptable, either gender is ok to hit within the bounds specified by the rules of the sport. Of course, if you hit anyone with the intent to injure them seriously, that goes against my opinion of healthy competition and fair play. In day-to-day life, unless your person or someone else's safety is under direct and serious threat, hitting people is unacceptable. To me, being kicked in the nuts, while obviously very,very painful (from male testimony and my own observance of guys' reactions), it doesn't to me justify physical retaliation.
She kicked him once, then stopped,right? It's not cool, not even a little bit for her to do that, unless of course your friend acted in a way that she felt her safety was very threatened (which I'm assuming he did not do). The girl needs to learn you can't resort to violence against men just because society says it's wrong for them to retaliate. BUT, at the same time, she didn't (I sincerely hope) do any lasting damage nor did she continue to attack him, thus not making her a serious threat to his personal safety. I understand the urge you had to hit her, been there myself with a guy who kicked me out of the way, but I don't really think it's justified force or defense. Sorry, but it seems best to me if you control that anger and refrain from hitting her.

Being kicked anywhere justifies physical retaliation as it is criminal battery, but the "nuts" as you put it are an even more vulnerable and critical place than most so why exactly does that make the crime lesser somehow?

Fuck that! Kicking a guy in the nuts unless it's a self defense move is not justified. If he was an asshole just slap him. He can learn from that too. Some of the other comments I read are ridiculous. If this girl truly had no reason to kick your friend, then I would definitely have stood up to her! It's not necessary to assault her, but certainly push her away! You could have slapped her if you'd had to. Imagine an alternative situation: if you were ALL guys or ALL girls - there wouldn't have been any question whether or not to step in. I would perhaps agree with the statement that violence is never the answer, but sometimes its hard to stand back and not do anything. Especially when your friend is being attacked!

Ordinarily I would say that it is never permissible to hit a girl but on the other hand the opposite should be true. People lash out very easily these days because they see non-stop violence on the television and in films and in rap music and so forth.
There is a danger in women feeling men won't hit back simply because they are women. Generally men have larger frames than men and are stronger than women, however there are many women who are actually more capable of inflicting harm on men because they give thought to the process and use men's strength against them, more and more women are learning martial arts as self defence as a matter of course thes days. If I had a daughter she would definitely have the opportunity to do this because of the world we live in.
I have known two and a possible third, cases of men physically abused in their married life and know people who are community workers who know many more. It is a matter of shame for men and they keep it quiet - but it goes on.
I would retaliate if a woman was aggressive to me but only if there was no time to modify her behaviour by verbal reasoning or restraint. However I have been mugged by three women who wanted money for drugs and they restrained me!
We live in a world where human behaviour is evolving more quickly than our social mores or the legal system can cope with.

Not unless she's like some body-building MMA fighter, in which case I'm more likely to run... (being honest) I've been kicked in the junk before by a girl (was in high school) she was crazy, she seemed to like hitting me... not really too many other people... just me mostly, anyways, not once did I strike her or so much as THINK about striking her, I blocked, and I never really needed to do more than that, she actually ended up hurting herself a few times on my knee and such (becase of how I blocked), but really, I'm a guy, I have more physical strength than the average girl/woman (even then) I don't need to harm a woman to feel like a man, it's easier to let them wear themselves out.
At least in cases like that, in more severe cases like weapons being used (knives and other hand-held weapons) I would say restraining them is just fine, not a whole lot of force is generally needed, however I could never condone the striking of a woman. Also, having chick friends and girlfriends helps with those sorts of issues, there are chicks who'd go mess up a chick who did something like that to their man or bf... anyways, hope this answered your question.
Personally, I think it's OK to hit someone in self defense only. Getting revenge is not self defense. Trying to make a point is not self defense. Being attacked and defending yourself is self defense. In your instance, I would say that avoiding that girl is your best bet.
I have heard people (primarily girls) who say that hitting a guy (or kicking him in the nuts, whatever) is the only way to get some guys to understand. As I have told my girlfriend, I would never do anything to hurt her. However, if she attacks me with the intent to hurt, I will drop her to the floor at a moment's notice. She probably did it to protect herself, us girls don't just randomly kick guys in the nuts unless we're being harrassed, which is probably what happened to her. You should get the whole story from your friend instead of putting it all on her.

I slapped a girl once in high school, but that was because she was very large (same body size as me) and was punching / kicking a friend of mine (male, but very small). I conciously didn't hit her, as I was raised never to lay a hand on a female, but I knew I couldn't just pull her off (already tried that). So I pulled her back and slapped her face quite hard, more to 'shock' her then anything.
