Can you call a friend of the opposite sex 'sweetie' in a non-romantic way?

I'm referring to guys calling girls sweetie and girls calling guys sweetie.

Sure! I do it all the time to my guy friends. Just make sure you don't over do it and word it right so it doesn't sound like you're trying to flirt, and they shouldn't think anything of it! I also say hun, love, lovely, but that is just my personality. :p
