Guy looks at a girl with wide eyes and eyebrows raised... like he's surprised?

I didn't say anything and neither did he at the time. We were at choir. He walked up like he was going to go sit down on his row... but before he passed me he stopped, looked in my eyes, told me hi and asked how I was. I smiled and said I was good... how was he? He said he was good. That was kind of rare because when he talks to me he is known to look around and not look in my eyes. He walks up and goes to his chair then turns around to go back and get his choir book. He finds his choir book..(I'm looking away from him to my left) he turns around.. I look at him... he looks at me but he opened his eyes wide, raised his eyebrows, and then his mouth dropped open. He looked to his left and went to his seat. After choir, I was walking... he ended up beside me but stopped checked the time on his phone (I saw out of the corner of my eye) I kept walking. When I get to the sanctuary door and turn to face the glass doors... I see out of the corner of my eye.. he is standing behind the podium at the front of the church facing me and he was staring (this past Wednesday). The Wednesday before that he was looking at me before practice was over (we were still in the loft... he sits a few rows behind me but I can see him out of the corner of my eye). He has stared me in the eyes once when he was closer to me but when I said something about it he said he zoned out and that he was so sorry.(Again he was looking around and apologized a second time before I walked away.- This was before Christmas). I gave him a Christmas card with my phone number in it and he looked shocked when I saw him again. He hasn't called me or anything though. Why did he look at me like he was surprised that I looked at him? I don't have much experience.
