Is it a good sign when a guy asks a mutual friend about you?

My crush and I were friends until he started acting strange around me and stopped talking to me. I think he realized how much he really liked me and it scared him. Also we kind of went separate ways for a while because I'm still in college and he's out working now (we met in college when he was still attending) so we don't see each other as much anymore but he hangs out with his friends a lot still. He was even awkward to talk to online but i know he's not a but online talker type of guy.

Our mutual friend who has been hanging out with my crush a lot lately told me my crush was asking about me. This friend doesn't know we like each other and he often jokes about my crush being single. He wouldn't tell me what my crush said because the friend said its "on the down low". So I thought he now knows my crush likes me and either he was told by my crush not to tell me but leaked the secret and/or my crush is trying to gain the courage to ask me out. I tried asking him out before but he sort of rejected me, probably just bad timing and I couldn't work up the courage to ask him again.
Is it a good sign when a guy asks a mutual friend about you?
