"Do I know you from somewhere?"

If a guy approaches a woman and says, "Excuse me, do I know you from somewhere?" but you know you've never seen him before, is that usually just an excuse to talk to you, or does he really think he's seen you before? What's the most likely reason guys might ask?

My female friend and I were actually discussing this. We both thought, what if they just so happen to think they've seen you before, and really have no intention in trying to pick you up.

Things that actually came out of the conversation:

- Is one conceited enough to think that they're actually trying to pick you up

- Sometimes that it's just confirmation that they've seen you before, and nothing more, and keep on moving

- It could be seen as an excuse to pick you up

It all really depends on how genuine they actually seem when they ask you that question.

I bumped into someone I knew (last time I saw her was 3 years ago). I actually dropped that line, and it turned out that I did know her (funnily enough, she remembered my name), and was truly for there for the confirmation factor. I asked how things were going, and was excited by the response, so I high fived her, and then I kept on walking.

In hindsight, I should have tried to pick her up... =D

It's a line usually... though I have an extremely good memory with faces, but terrible with names, so this happens to me a lot where I'm asking a girl if I know her from somewhere because it's just annoying me that I can't remember it on my own
