Why would you give a guy a fake number?

why? why not just not give him a number period? why crush a guy so hard?

Admittedly I have done it once because I wanted the guy to 'save face'. We were in a business setting (he was a taxi driver and I was the passenger) and he was much older than I was (by about 15+ years.) He incessantly asked for my number while we talked, but in-between those he would degrade himself for asking as well ('Oh but I'm much too old for you', 'you'd never go for a man like me', 'I don't want to /force/ you of course, you don't have to') and it made me feel incredibly awkward to refuse outright.

Admittedly I'm a nice girl (or so I'd like to think) and I am quite aware that I am sharing the cab with this man for the next 15-20 minutes, it just seemed easier to give him a fake number (well not actually fake, one number was just hard to read cause my handwriting is horrible) rather than ride in complete awkwardness.

I figured this way he would have a little smile for a while and I would too, I never realized it would be that hurtful.

That was the only time I gave a possibly fake number. Others were real and I either returned their texts or held out to a cold fizzle...Yea I'm bad at confrontations. :/

That really sucks dude, I'm sorry. I can think of a couple reasons. A) She's a bitch. Or B) She didn't want to reject you to your face and not give you a number [and see your feelings hurt, because it makes her feel like the bad guy], so she pretended to give you her number because it makes HER feel better to not have to see the disappointment on your face when you realized it was a fake.

Either way, I think it's stupid. Either give someone your number, or don't. Don't play games.

What happened when you called the number she gave though? Is there any possibility that something else weird could be up? That it was actually her number?

1 possible reason is that some guys don't take rejection well. There are some guys that if you try to say "no" to, they get all mad and mean to you and some even become verbally abusive. ((its happened to me before)) So to avoid possible awkward situations some girls give out fake numbers. I used to give out my real number and just never pick up when he calls. Now I just try not to get into conversations with guys I'm not interested in.  Sorry you got your feelings hurt but most likely it wasn't personal, just something she felt she had to do. Move on, it's not the end of the world there will be more girls :)

don't EVER take rejection personally. remember she knows nothing about you so it has to be about her own state of mind at the time or your approach. it CAN'T be about you as a person because she doesn't know you. learn to pity her for the awesome time she's passing up by rejecting you and move on to someone else.

They do it because being honest is hard, so they'll lie to you and go away feeling good.

If you want to avoid this dial her number when she gives it to you; if she's genuine then she won't care, tell her you just wanted to get it in there (damn address book is hard to use, whatever). If her phone doesn't ring then you can have some fun at her expense.

It seems a girl did that to you?! I'm sorry...but keep in mind that not all girls do that (so obviously not all girls have bitchy ego) ...her behavior was really heartless so I won't even try to find an excuse for what she did, because nothing justifys it.

very simple man, a lot of girls are just ****s and it has nothing to do with you. They laugh about giving out fake numbers with their friends. Something you can do instead is just always give out your number, because if a chick likes you she will call you back, if not then oh well! That way you don't have to worry about stupid ****s messing with guys and getting away with it.

If I was single and that happened to me, I would either give my real number (in case I liked him), or I wouldn't give any number... to give a fake number is really childish...

1. Some people don't take rejection well. 2. Some will bother until they get your number. 3. Some will constantly call you and pester you. 4.Just not interested, and it's faster to reject this way.

Because she`s a bitch or maybe there could be other reasons like she lost her phone, ot fell in the dishwasher :/, it fell in the shower :/ there are thousands of possibilites, don`t beat yourself up about it.
