Guy at the gym, caught him checking me out?

So there is this guy at the gym that I go to and we always end up there at the same time around noon. I'm pretty sure I caught him checking me out several times. It seemed like when I was on the elliptical (I had my headphones on) he was slowly walking by me and I'm pretty sure he was looking at me. I didn't know whether to look back at him or not... lol. I think I might try to start up a conversation with him or should I just wait for him to strike one up with me? I always have my headphones on so I don't know if he thinks I don't want to be bothered or what...

Yeah, you should make it clear to him you want to talk to him, or just ask him a question about some machine he's using and let him use that as a chance to chat more with you.

Frankly I've only ever had bad experiences trying to talk to girls at the gym. They're very much about not being bothered, as you put it.

I think most single girls wouldn't mind being bothered at the gym like me the only reason I bring my mp3 player is because it gets me motivated to work out xD

Take off your headphones(seems like you don't want to get approached) and work out not too far from him, smile and let him do the rest

The headphones make it difficult, almost impossible for him to initiate contact. I would stop wearing headphones, and just smile and say hi, in a casual and natural manner. If he says hi back, say something like "i see you hear often, my name is ...".
