Guy friend asked me to go to the gym with him to be his spotter. Is this innocent or is this making a move?

We’re pretty good friends. When talking he said “you need to come with me to the gym and be my spotter”. I was thrown off and ignored his request but wanted some feedback.

I do not know about this guy but, I usually have friends that are girls. For about 6 months now, my friend who is a girl and I have been going to the gym together. We have spotted for each other as well as other workouts together. We even go running. I did ask her but, not for anything more than doing something with a friend.

When you're at the gym you can ask pretty much anyone if they can spot you, there's no reason for him to ask you go come to spot him

Do you lift? If so, it could be an innocent request. But, if you aren't close to his strength, I'd think it's a move on his part.
