I left my ex despite still loving her because of the long distance. The realisation (or more likely giving up) that I would not be able to return to her country, long term, for a few years at best. I knew she wanted kids and before she was in her 30's and I couldn't meet that desire. On top of that, we had little in common to talk about over the long distance. I'm useless at keeping in contact as I don't like small talk, so with no shared hobbies it was hard to ever talk. In person we got on really really well though, we just understood each other and were happy doing our own things, but together.

How are you feeling today? Any regrets?

3 years ago, we still talk occasionally as friends.

I am sad about not being together as it might have given me more motivation to study, and that might have gotten me to her country by now. My only regret is how I broke up with her. Not that I did, I wish I'd been more considerate.

You sound like a self reflective kind of guy. I'm pretty sure the break up wasn't that bad. And you two are still talking so that's nice..
But I can totally relate to what you're say. I'm going through a similar situation

It wasn't the right time.. we were both in the navy and together for a year.

As my career took me to hawaii I could have asked her to marry me just to keep her with me.. but it would have cost her her career or her freedom.

I loved her.. but I had to let her go. Because as much as I wanted to be selfish, I knew that our love would have soured if I had forced her to make that choice. Her career or her love for me.

So I didn't ask her. I made the choice.
