Why is My Crush Silent When we Talk?

My crush seems to time situations perfectly so that we run into each other. He is around me a lot more than he used to be, and the 'stare but look away when you catch me thing' is now a stare without any break in the eye contact. When I say hi to him, he can usually only say hi or one word back, but he seems to linger a bit then walk away. Today before I approached him, he looked down at the ground and smiled to himself. Why does he do this?
