Why does my crush talks frankly over the phone and is awkward in person and doesn't talk?

My crush is an outgoing and flirty person. He talks with every girl in college, he teases them. But he is different around me. He never makes fun of me. He doesn't talk to me in person when others are around , instead he just waves a smile sometimes. We spoke once or twice regarding studies only when there were less people. He gets awkward around me. But he talks to me a lot over the phone, we are very frank with each other. He frankly shares his problems and worries with me. I always try to encourage him. He helps me out with my studies also. I think he knows I like him I have made it pretty obvious. If he is talking to a group of my friends and I'm also there, he won't pay attention to me, instead he will look at my friend and talk to her. He only smiles at me and says hi whenever we cross each other. But why does he not talk to me in college, but talks freely with every girl in person? Does he hate me? Or does he like me?
