Since you only see this guy during class, try to get more information about him during your lab sessions. Ask him questions about himself and see if you can connect with him on some level. Once you've established some sort of connection, you can work towards talking outside class too. You could ask him to study together after class or grab a bit to eat together to chat more and get to know each other better. It could even be something as simple as asking him what other classes he's taking or if he has any recommendations for extracurricular activities or clubs.
