What's the most memorable compliment you've received from someone?

One of my close friends was a bartender I've known for years, and being a bartender he was an especially astute judge of character.

He once told me that I'm like someone who isn't ashamed to show my asshole to other people. I think that's one of the best compliments I ever received in my whole life since it showed so much observation.

What he meant by it is not that I literally bend down and show my anus to people, but that I'm completely unafraid to say what's on my mind: that I'm metaphorically naked, so to speak. So I really liked that and he didn't mean it entirely as a compliment, even though he said it's my most endearing quality, but I took it as such: pros and cons. Most of all, it was such a keen observation about me.

I never liked generic compliments very much like, "You're handsome/smart/cute". People can say that to anybody. So the best compliments I ever received like the above was something that required observing me very carefully. Also I don't mind if they are also both a criticism and a compliment at the same time; that might actually be my favorite.

Another one involved a comment one of my female friends made on my mixi profile (social media we use in Japan; it comes with the unusual feature that our friends can write our descriptions on our profile so that our friends describe us and not just us). She wrote something like this translated from Japanese:

"One of the most reckless and foolish guys I've ever known in my entire life. But also the ultimate gentleman."

I really loved that one!
