From what you've described, it sounds like he was definitely sending some mixed signals there with that hug!

The fact that he hugged you from behind like that, around your neck/shoulders area, and held on tightly for a few seconds, to me says he was going above just a casual friendly hug. That's more intimate body contact. Guys don't usually hug girls they're not very close with in that way.

Since you mentioned he's taller too, hugging from behind almost sounds protective or couple-y too. Like he was claiming you as "his" even though you're not official.

As for calling it a joke after, that seems like classic guy behavior - doing something bold but then backtracking to play it off casually so it's not too vulnerable. We suck at being direct with our feelings sometimes!

My guess is he likes you for sure, and the hug was his way of showing physical affection since you guys haven't made it official yet. I'd say flirt back with him, maybe bring up the hug casually and see how he reacts. There's a good chance he wants more with you!
